History of Phoenix
Phoenix was formed in 1867, and incorporated in 1881 as the city of Phoenix. The history of Phoenix is long, starting with the Hohokams who established the first main urban civilization in the Salt River Valley and built a canal system which is used now as well. Then came the Native American people settled in the arid landscape.
The city grew swiftly and in 20th century, it has its own newspaper and rail network. In 1992, Phoenix became capital of Arizona, and in 1929, it got its own airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. World War II demonstrated the making of Phoenix city, with the city being in charge for the manufacture and distribution of weapons and other military supplies. Phoenix in post-war years grew rapidly. Presently, Phoenix is the sixth largest city in the United States.
